In Other Words

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT) – Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

Sometimes we miss the meaning of scripture because we use words differently than in biblical times.  I imagine that when a person exclaimed “Oh, my God!” they were down on their knees praising God or begging for His mercy.

In today’s verse, hope isn’t wishful thinking, but rather confidence, trust, and expectation.  Biblical hope is sure.  In fact, a new translation called The Voice replaces ‘assurance’ in this verse with ‘absolute conviction’.

Read the verse again, replacing these two words:  Faith is the confidence that what we expect will actually happen; it gives us absolute conviction about things we cannot see.

Does this change your understanding of faith?

Where is your faith when described with such certainty?

  1. I love to read scriptures! I am not familiar with "The Voice" version. My faith remains the same with either version. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Cindy, The Voice is a new version, similar to The Message in that it uses contemporary language. The Voice takes a storytelling approach. Thanks for reading and commenting. -Cathy

  2. It's one of my favorite versus in all of scripture; and Hebrews is one of my favorite books. Thank you for the reminder this morning!

  3. I'm glad you were reminded of this verse. It helps me when I don't understand - Your ways are higher than mine and Your thoughts are higher than mine. Just keep trusting and following. Thanks for reading and commenting. I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. I'm trying to keep up with the UBC.
