It Will Be Different

Mark 10:42-45 (NLT) – So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.  But among you it will be different.  Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.  For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.

Among you it will be different.

This sentence grabs my attention.  A Christian in any position of leadership will lead differently.  What is a servant’s goal?  The servant nurtures and provides all the needs for the served to flourish and succeed, often anticipating the need.  The servant’s whole focus is the wellbeing of the served.  What other servant characteristics can you think of?  Look to Jesus who was the model servant, giving all of Himself for us.

Does this mean it’s wrong to climb the ladder?  Does it mean you shouldn’t want to improve your position?  It probably depends on how you climb.  We are all in some position of leadership within our family, community or workplace.

As a Christian, do you lead differently?  (click to tweet)

Are you curious about the context of today’s verse?  Today’s verse is a response to James and John’s request to receive a place of honor next to Jesus.  Click on the scripture reference to read a longer portion at Bible Gateway.
