What are you thinking?

Proverbs 23:7 (NLV) For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

The Preacher’s Word this morning atypically sounds like a self-help blog.  Ken Weliever quotes James Allen as saying “man is the master of thought, the molder of character, and maker and shaper of condition, environment, and destiny.”

And where is God in this?

God is in full agreement.  Our thoughts determine our character – or in Bible speak, as he thinks in his heart, so is he.  Jesus said in Matthew 15:19 that from the heart come evil thoughts.  Furthermore, our thoughts precede our actions and foretell our circumstances (now that definitely sounds like new age self help!).  The idea is that if we trust in God and find hope in His goodness we will perceive and handle circumstances more positively.  Paul demonstrated this in Philippians 4:11 saying “I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances.”

I encourage you to read the full article which ends with this poem by Samuel Smiles:
Sow a thought, and you reap an act;
Sow an act, and you reap a habit;
Sow a habit, and you reap a character;
Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.  What do you think?
