Fasting from TV

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

There’s something about 40…

The rains flooded the earth for 40 days and nights, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, Jesus began his ministry by fasting and facing temptation for 40 days, and now we observe 40 days of Lent.

We’re just beginning this 6 week journey of self-reflection.  Who am I?  Whose am I?  What’s my role in God’s storyline?  How does Jesus’ sacrifice impact my life?  From what do I need to repent (turn away from, change)?

This might take longer than 40 days….

But being intentional during Lent will help, which is why I give up TV for Lent.  I often complain about the garbage on TV and yet I still relax at the end of the day by channel surfing.  It’s a complete waste of time!  It’s time I could be using more productively - time I could be spending with God.  So I fast and turn my focus to reading Scripture and faith based books, articles, blogs and devotions.  On evenings when I just need to ‘veg out’, I pray or get extra sleep.  (Along the same lines, I will refrain from pointless Facebook surfing.)

Do I miss it?  Absolutely!  But I have come to enjoy this season of relationship with God.  I focus on what is good and true and honorable.  I listen for His direction in my life.  I consider my blessings and the ways in which I fall short.  I humble myself before this great, wonderful, and loving God who desires to be in relationship with me.

Is it worth it?  Absolutely!

Like a productive garden, a rich relationship should be tended regularly.  To be reminded to plant His Word in your heart, follow me on Twitter @Cathy_Chung or subscribe at Seeds of Scripture.
