Your Turn

1 John 4:7-8,17,20 (NLT) Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God.  Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.  But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.  And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect.  So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.  If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?

It’s your turn today.

Your turn to listen for God’s personal message from His Word.

For the next five minutes, put aside any distractions.  Turn away from your messy kitchen or desk.  Put your phone and laptop on silent.  Find a place to be alone and only respond to your children if it sounds like there’s blood.  It’s only a few minutes.

Take a deep, calming breath and ask God for personal understanding and growth.

Then re-read today’s Scripture slowly.  Notice which phrases or ideas catch your attention.  Does a particular person or situation come to mind?  What is your emotional response?  Why do you feel that way?  Do you have questions?

Pause to reflect.

Read it one more time.  Yes, I really want you to read it again.  Then summarize the message in your own words.

Let this encounter with God’s Word tumble around in your soul for a moment and throughout the rest of the day.  Ask God to help you apply it to your life.

Like a productive garden, a rich relationship should be tended regularly.  To be reminded to plant His Word in your heart, follow me on Twitter @Cathy_Chung or subscribe at Seeds of Scripture.
