Unmatched Socks

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT) “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.  For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

I love the sense of completion when the laundry basket is empty and the socks have all found mates.  My collection of unmatched socks disturbs me.  Is the missing sock truly lost or hiding under a bed?  How long do I wait for the mate?  Where do lost socks go?

I like the job to be complete.  I like to tie up loose ends.  I don’t like not knowing.

Laundry isn’t like that and neither is our understanding of God.  There is mystery.

We will always have a collection of unanswered questions and things that don’t make sense.  Yet.  Maybe never.

As we learn and mature, some questions from earlier in our faith journey will find answers.  However, if we study scripture well, new questions will arise that can’t be explained at that time.  With some longstanding issues, we may need to stop asking and accept the mystery.

Have you dug through your collection of unanswered faith questions recently? Perhaps you can make immediate connections! Are you constantly learning, gaining better understanding, and generating new questions? God wants us to ask questions, wrestle with doubts, work toward deeper understanding, and develop a personal, meaningful faith.

What are your faith questions? Where will you seek insight?

  1. "With some longstanding issues, we may need to stop asking and accept the mystery." This statement should be engraved in all of our hearts. Accept the mystery. If we could understand God then He would not be God. I love this post. My mystery question and please no one try to answer it is, Why would anyone not want to know the Love of God? I have my own biblical theories but it is mind boggling to me.
