Setting Goals

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
- Jesus
Mark 8:36 (NLT)

What is your purpose in life? At what point will you feel satisfied that you’ve accomplished your goal? For what are you striving?

Popularity?    Comfort?    Success?    Security?    Wealth?    Happiness?

Big questions for a short devotion, and here’s another biggie to contemplate.

Is your goal for you? Or for Him?

God blesses some with position or wealth so they can influence policy or aid the less fortunate. For others, He desires popularity, even celebrity, so His message can spread through their network. But often we want wealth or popularity for selfish reasons - because they make us feel important or secure.

Jesus says in the previous verse:

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. Mark 8:35

Are you working for the sake of the Gospel or hanging on to what you desire in life?

No matter our circumstances, economic status, or circle of friends, everything we do should reveal Jesus to others. Our life’s purpose is to point to God, giving Him credit and glory.

This can be difficult in our ‘me first’ culture that shuns humility and portrays God as irrelevant. We risk exposure to ridicule and rejection. In this world, we will face trouble.

But Jesus says it’s worth it - living for Him will save our lives. Striving after our selfish goals will yield nothing. Inner satisfaction and joy result from doing His purpose.

Talk with God about your goals. Offer Him your position, talents, and time to further the Kingdom. Are any adjustments needed?
