O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you.
Psalm 63:1 (NLT)
I’ve been listening to too much praise music. Is that possible?
My iPod contains mostly Christian music with a little bit of country. I plug in my earbuds while gardening, exercising, and washing dishes. I pray along with the lyrics, praising God, seeking His presence, and lifting my heart to Him.
The good news is that I’m exercising more frequently. The bad news is that, with repetition, the music has fallen into the background. I’m not praying it. I’m not feelin’ it. I’m not connecting with God.
And I miss it.
I use various playlists and select different artists, but instead of focusing on God, my mind wanders. Maybe I need new music.
So on the treadmill yesterday, I pushed my earbuds in firmly but didn’t press play.
With the outside world muffled, I closed my eyes and prayed (only recommended if you can hold on). For 45 minutes I prayed – for people and circumstances and guidance. And I listened. The time flew by, the pounds fell away, and my heart filled up.
Has your prayer life become routine? Are you longing for closeness? How do you keep your relationship with God fresh?
