Matthew 30-3 (NLT)
The Jews anticipated a king, not the babe of a poor teenage nobody. They awaited a military leader to deliver justice and free them from Roman persecution, not a humble servant preaching love for the enemy. They expected Jesus to reinforce Jewish law, not criticize the teachers. Jesus matched some, but not all, of the religious leaders’ list of requirements. His execution assured them He wasn’t the Messiah.
And yet He was the One they sought.
What do we expect Jesus’ return to look like? What kind of person are we awaiting? Will we miss Him as the Jewish leaders did because of preconceived ideas?
We base our expectations on Scripture, but so did they. Jesus was a branch from the stump of David (Isaiah 11:1), however the promised forever throne (1 Kings 9:5 ) wasn’t earthly. Deliverance of the poor, oppressed and captive (Isaiah 61) referred to a spiritual enemy, not Rome. They had the right idea, but limited perspective.
Who and what do we anticipate? Will we recognize the event? Jesus says he’ll return from the clouds to the sound of trumpets. Is this a parade in the sky led by a robed, bearded human and a white, winged marching band? How else might we interpret His words?
Just like His manger arrival, expect a surprise when Jesus returns. (tweet this)
