What's an Appropriate Gift for Jesus?

They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Matthew 2:11-12 (CEB)

We know the names of these gifts well even if we can’t describe or identify myrrh.

The Magi brought Jesus expensive, fit-for-a-king gifts. Their value must have been helpful to Mary and Joseph as they escaped Judea and settled the family in Egypt.

But these aren’t the only gifts the Wise Men gave Jesus.

The Magi traveled a long distance in search of Him. Even though they weren’t Jews, the wise men studied ancient Hebrew texts and astronomy to learn everything they could about the predicted King of the Jews.

On faith they followed a star, not sure of where they were headed or what they’d find. And Matthew tells us that upon finding the Holy Child, they fell to their knees and honored Him.

Their gift giving began months before His birth as they studied, believed, and acted on faith. Their unplanned, spontaneous baby gift was worship. Then they opened their chests.

As we bustle about shopping and wrapping, what are we giving Jesus?

Could we spend time at His feet in prayer?
Could we know Him better by studying the Bible?
Could we step out in faith, believing His promises?
Could we worship Him with awe?

The Magi’s gift-giving began as they studied, believed, and acted in faith. (tweet this)

What are you giving Jesus this Christmas?
