Locker Room Jesus Talk

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.
2 Corinthians 1:8-9 (NLT)

You never know where a faith conversation might occur.

After a recent workout, I noticed two women talking animatedly in a corner of the locker room. We’ve smiled encouraging at each other during tough exercise classes, but never spoken otherwise. One woman sounded distressed, the other encouraging. It was impossible not to overhear the encourager’s statement “Sweetie, God won’t give you more than you can handle.”

“Amen!” I thought, but my heart stirred. That’s not true.

God often gives us more than we can handle because He wants to be our help and strength. (tweet this)

So at the risk of sounding preachy, I approached the two whose conversation had gotten even more boisterous.

After apologizing for eavesdropping, I turned to the encourager, “Excuse me, but I do think God gives us more than we can handle on our own precisely so we’ll turn to Him for help.”  They responded with laughter, Amens and “You know it, girl!” as if the locker room was church.

The troubled woman admitted it was just the reminder she needed and we enjoyed a lively conversation about God, faith and today’s youth. We now have camaraderie among us for future locker room church.

Faith conversations occur in the most #unexpected places. (tweet this)

In what unexpected place have you discovered Christian community? Will you share your story?
